Dr. Helak is Board Certified in General Surgery with Certificate of Additional Qualification in Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery through the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons, and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.  He earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine at Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in Blacksburg, Virginia.  He then completed his general surgery internship and residency at Ascension Health St John Macomb-Oakland Hospital and Michigan State University in Detroit, Michigan.  

 

Dr. Helak is a native of Wilmington, North Carolina.  After completing his general surgery training, he returned home to North Carolina, practicing in Columbus County from 2016 -2022, before returning to Wilmington. In January 2022, Dr. Helak opened Bluewater Surgical, PLLC in Wilmington, NC.  Dr Helak specializes in minimally invasive and robotic surgery for the management of obesity and related comorbidities.  He also offers general surgery procedures with minimally invasive techniques.
